Cullen Drescher Speckhart, Attorney at Law

Cullen Drescher Speckhart is a Shareholder and head of the firm's Richmond office. She is a specialist in bankruptcy, restructuring, and financial litigation who frequently writes and speaks publicly on legal implications of developments in the financial sector. She serves the firm as Co-Chair of its Restructuring & Bankruptcy Litigation practice group. In 2017, Ms. Speckhart was selected to the American Bankruptcy Institute’s inaugural “40 under 40” list which recognizes bankruptcy, insolvency and restructuring professionals from around the world.

Ms. Speckhart actively represents a wide range of parties to insolvency proceedings, including creditors, creditors’ committee members, creditors’ committees, trustees, and foreign representatives. Ms. Speckhart has participated as counsel in some of the largest bankruptcy cases in and outside of Virginia, including In re White Birch Paper Company and In re Bear Island Paper Company (counsel to the Canadian Monitor); In re Workflow Management Inc. (counsel to the Debtors); In re Circuit City Stores Inc. (co-counsel to the Debtors); USA Discounters Ltd.; Eastman Kodak Company; James River Coal Company; In re Patriot Coal Company; In re Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (counsel to the ANR Claims Oversight Committee); In re Arch Coal Inc. (counsel to committee co-chair and to the Arch Coal Claims Oversight Committee); In re Peabody Energy Corporation (Plan Co-Administrator); In re Noranda Aluminum, Inc., In re Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc. (counsel to Liquidating Trustee); and In re the Gymboree Corporation.

Ms. Speckhart serves on the advisory board of the Institute for Restructuring Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2015, Ms. Speckhart co-authored the American Bankruptcy Institute’s manual on chapter 15 of the Bankruptcy Code. She has presented to national audiences on various legal considerations including those surrounding corporate insolvencies, banking technologies, and regulatory compliance. Ms. Speckhart is Past President of the Tidewater Bankruptcy Bar Association and a member of the faculty of the William & Mary School of Law, where she lectures on the topics of creditors’ rights and bankruptcy.

Using her strong background in restructuring and insolvency, Ms. Speckhart provides advice to financial institutions with respect to risk management and strategic implementation. Ms. Speckhart additionally represents clients in a wide range of non-bankruptcy matters, including commercial litigation, complex workouts, receiverships, corporate shareholder disputes, and professional malpractice matters.

Before entering private practice, Ms. Speckhart clerked for the Honorable Stephen C. St. John, Chief Judge, United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. During law school, she was the First-Prize winner of the inaugural American Bankruptcy Institute’s Writing Competition, and the first law student ever to receive the Thatcher Prize for Excellence, which is presented annually to a William & Mary graduate student of outstanding scholarship, service, and character.

Ms. Speckhart serves on the Board of the Bankruptcy Section of the Virginia Bar Association and as a member of the Advisory Board of Bank @Lantec. In addition, Ms. Speckhart is the Executive Secretary of EQUI-KIDS Therapeutic Riding Program in Virginia Beach.
